Emily M. Bender
An American linguist at the University of Washington and lead author, with Timnit Gebru and Margaret Mitchell among others, of the 2021 paper "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots", which named and popularised the "stochastic parrot" metaphor: the idea that a large language model recombines patterns in its training data without any grounding in meaning or reference to the world. She is a prominent critic of anthropomorphising language models and co-hosts the podcast "Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000" with Alex Hanna, dissecting exaggerated claims made about AI systems.
