Walter Pitts

A largely self-taught American logician who, working with neurophysiologist Warren McCulloch, co-authored the 1943 paper that first modelled the neuron as a logical computing unit. Their work gave connectionism its founding mathematical idea, decades before computing power existed to build networks at any meaningful scale. (See also: Warren McCulloch, Neural network)
