Artificial general intelligence (AGI)

A hypothetical future AI system that could match or exceed human-level performance across virtually any intellectual task, rather than being limited to the specific tasks it was designed or trained for (see narrow AI). Whether AGI is achievable, how it would be recognised, and how far current systems are from it are all contested, and the term is often used loosely in marketing as well as in serious research.
