General-purpose AI (GPAI)

The term used in the EU AI Act for an AI model that can perform a wide range of tasks and be adapted for many different downstream uses, rather than being built for a single narrow purpose. Under the Act, providers of general-purpose AI models face specific transparency and documentation obligations, with stricter rules for the most capable ("systemic risk") models.
