Melanie Mitchell
An American computer scientist at the Santa Fe Institute, known for work on genetic algorithms and analogical reasoning in AI, including the Copycat project developed with Douglas Hofstadter. Her 2019 book "Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans" is a widely read, sceptical examination of claims made about AI capabilities, arguing that many apparent breakthroughs reflect narrower pattern-matching than genuine understanding. Not to be confused with AI ethics researcher Margaret Mitchell. (See also: Emergent capabilities, Narrow AI)
