An Eritrean-Ethiopian-American computer scientist known for research on [[Algorithmic bias|algorithmic bias]] in facial recognition, and for co-authoring, with lead author [[Emily M. Bender]] and [[Margaret Mitchell]] among others, the widely cited 2021 paper "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots", which raised early, influential concerns about the risks of ever-larger [[Large language model (LLM)|language models]]. Her departure from Google's AI ethics team in 2020 became a high-profile case study in the tension between corporate AI labs and internal critics; she went on to found the independent research institute DAIR.
