An American linguist at the University of Washington and lead author, with [[Timnit Gebru]] and [[Margaret Mitchell]] among others, of the 2021 paper "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots", which named and popularised the "stochastic parrot" metaphor: the idea that a [[Large language model (LLM)|large language model]] recombines patterns in its [[Training data|training data]] without any grounding in meaning or reference to the world. She is a prominent critic of anthropomorphising language models and co-hosts the podcast "Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000" with Alex Hanna, dissecting exaggerated claims made about AI systems.
