Meredith Whittaker

President of the Signal Foundation and co-founder, with Kate Crawford, of the AI Now Institute in 2017. After thirteen years at Google she helped organise the 2018 walkout over the company's handling of sexual harassment and its military contracts, and left soon after. Her argument is structural: modern AI requires data and compute at a scale only a handful of firms possess, so the technology tends to concentrate power by default, and questions of surveillance, labour and monopoly cannot be separated from technical ones.
