Lotfi Zadeh

An Azerbaijani-American engineer who introduced fuzzy sets in 1965 and fuzzy logic thereafter, replacing strict binary membership with degrees: a temperature can be 0.7 "warm" and 0.3 "hot" at once. The framework gave engineers a rigorous way to encode vague human categories, and fuzzy controllers went into cameras, washing machines, and the braking systems of the Sendai subway.
