Charles Babbage

An English mathematician and inventor who designed the Difference Engine and the Analytical Engine, mechanical devices that, though never completed in his lifetime, are recognised as conceptual forerunners of the modern computer. His collaboration with Ada Lovelace on the Analytical Engine produced some of the earliest thinking about programmable, general-purpose machines. (See also: Ada Lovelace)
