Allen Newell

An American researcher who, with Herbert Simon, developed the Logic Theorist and General Problem Solver at Carnegie Mellon, early programs that used symbolic rules to solve problems the way humans reason through them. Newell and Simon's work laid much of the theoretical groundwork for symbolic AI and cognitive science more broadly. (See also: Herbert Simon, Symbolic AI)
