Percy Liang

A Stanford computer scientist who directs the Center for Research on Foundation Models, the group that coined the term "foundation model" in its 2021 report on the opportunities and risks of models trained broadly and adapted widely. His lab built HELM, a benchmark that evaluates language models across many scenarios and metrics rather than reporting a single headline number, and the Foundation Model Transparency Index, which scores developers on what they disclose about data, labour and compute.
