John McCarthy

An American computer scientist who coined the term "artificial intelligence" and organised the 1956 Dartmouth workshop that founded the field as an area of academic study. McCarthy also invented the Lisp programming language, long the dominant language of symbolic AI research, and made foundational contributions to formal reasoning in AI.
