An American computer scientist who coined the term &amp;quot;artificial intelligence&amp;quot; and organised the 1956 Dartmouth workshop that founded the field as an area of academic study. McCarthy also invented the Lisp programming language, long the dominant language of [[Symbolic AI|symbolic AI]] research, and made foundational contributions to formal reasoning in AI.
