A British-Canadian cognitive psychologist and computer scientist often called one of the "godfathers of AI", known for decades of work on [[Backpropagation|backpropagation]] and [[Neural network|neural networks]] that helped revive [[Connectionism|connectionist]] AI after its long funding drought. He shared the 2018 Turing Award with [[Yoshua Bengio]] and [[Yann LeCun]] for their work on [[Deep learning]], and the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for earlier foundational work on neural networks.
